MY VISIT TO BORLEY RECTORY SITE
Borley Hall in the picture above, was once the home of the Waldegaves who also occupied the famous Borley Rectory - the site of the most famous psychic investigation ever to be carried out in the UK.
We had to take this shot of Borley Hall very quickly as it is situated down a long, private road. Half way down the road is a gate and although the gate was open we were hesitant to travel any closer to the property. The hall is feet away from where Borely Rectory once stood before it burnt down in 1939.
We were lucky to find Borley Hall. We only noticed the private road as we were about to leave the village. There are no signs to show that Borley Hall is down there. We had searched the hamlet thoroughly and when we asked locals where the site of Borley Rectory once stood, they wouldn't tell us and looked at us as though we were weird. This is hardly surprising...on the night of Halloween, so many ghost hunters turn up, the police have to guard the private road.
I had a feeling about that road as I was about to give up my search, so I took pot luck and drove down it and there stood Borley Hall site.
We were very excited and nervous at the same time. If we had been spotted as we took the shot, there would most likely have been trouble and this was made even worse as there was not a sound from anything...no birds singing and no sound of cars passing through the village. We felt totally alone. There is definitely a weird atmosphere to this isolated area.
This creepy looking tree, dating back to medieval times, stands at the top of Hall Road as you enter the village of Borley and just before the Borley sign below.
The 12th century church below serves this fascinating, but eerie, rural community...a place I will never forget.
