MYSTERIOUS PLACES - Mount Shahdag is an interesting mountain in the overall impressive Caucasus mountain range. It is the highest mountain in Azerbaijan. On its slopes there are cave dwellings that suggest the area has been inhabited for at least 9,000 years.

Near Mount Shahdag also lie the ruins of the ancient town of Kabala, with a history of 2,000 years. Kabala was the capital of Caucasian Albania, a state that existed on the territory of present-day Azerbaijan from ancient up into medieval times. The Udi people, believed to be the descendants of the Caucasian Albanians. The mysterious kingdom of Hereti (Ereti) of the ancient Ers or Er people are also in this area. The region was part of ancient Urartu for a long time.

Mount Shahdagh It is impossible to climb, officially due to steep slopes and nasty wind. However local legend has it, that the mountain and caves are the home of “the ancient people” and that only those can approach who are god-like themselves. Also a holy sword is said to be hidden in the mountain. Since most inhabitants of the region are now Muslims, they say that it is the sword of the one who brought Islam to Dagestan. But isn’t it likely that an older version of this legend once existed, that the locals had (or still have?) knowledge of some ‘founder’ of mankind?

Could there be more to Mount Shahdagh than meets the eye?  This mountain has a mysterious appearance; it seems somewhat like a giant ship. If we look at satellite images of the mountain top, it is open to interpretation. Is it really all snow and ice that we see there? Or could Mount Shahdagh be a candidate for ancient alien archeology? More research is needed to find out.
