ANCIENT CHINA - Scientists are now using the latest techniques to try and unravel the mystery of ancient Chinese jade disks or "bi". The oldest examples of these mysterious ancient disks date to the Chinese Neolithic Period, around 3300 BC. We don't know what purpose the discs originally had, or what they symbolized.
The Chinese jade discs were often found buried with important, high-ranking people. It is thought that they symbolized the afterworld and helped the deceased travel there safely. But much is still to be discovered about the discs.
