Possibly one of the most famous mysteries is the disappearance of Amelia Earhart, an intrepid and ambitious woman pilot. She set several records for woman pilots and was to culminate her achievements with a circumnavigation of the globe in her specially equipped twin-engine plane, called the Electra. Howland Island, a tiny speck in the middle of the South Pacific was to be one of the final stops.
