GHOST ON MILLER STREET
I have a friend, well actually a colleague I work with; “Chris”. He is the Professional Standards Sergeant in the Administration office of the Police Department and he told me about strange events that happened to him while living on Miller Street.
Let me give you a little background first on how I came upon his testimony.
I was reading a lot of different stories posted on this website; among other websites, and decided to do my own little survey of average people and possible experiences with ghosts or hauntings. I started asking a few co-workers about any experiences they may have had of paranormal activity. Chris works in the same office I do, so, one day I asked Chris if he believed in ghosts. (This is how I opened the conversation). His response was, “I am not really sure”. Typical response I would get from most people. So, to engage further conversation, I asked if he had ever experienced any paranormal activity.
Now understand, Chris is in his early forties; a no nonsense, straight-laced, black and white type of guy. He has been in the military for many years and served several tours in the Middle East. He is basically a no bulls*** type of guy. (Sorry, couldn’t figure out any other way to say it). Anyway, he is a person you would least likely think would have a story to tell. So, imagine my surprise when he responded with, “Yes, I have”.
Needless to say, I was asking more questions than you could shake a stick at. So, I will tell you what he told me; here goes:
Chris found a house for sale extremely cheap, previously owned by an old man named Mr. Hines, had just recently died and the family just wanted to get rid of it. This was several years ago. Needless to say, he bought the house and quickly moved in. The house was small with an unfinished basement. His first experience with Mr. Hines was one night while lying in bed trying to go to sleep. In the quiet of the night he heard music; gospel music. So Chris got up and walked through the house and had determined that the music was coming from the basement. As he got closer to the door to the basement, the music stopped. He went down the stairs to see where the sound could have come from, but to no avail, he had not stored any kind of electronic device in the basement that could have made the sounds of music. All he had stored was dishes and clothes. His first thought was, he was imaging things, and so, Chris went back to bed. After he got settled, the music began to play again. Chris, being the kind of fearless man that he is, decided to just go to sleep. (He is braver than me).
Now, the basement is where Chris’ dog spent her nights. Food and water were also stored there as well. When it was time for bed, Chris would take the dog to the basement so she could eat and retire for the night. On occasion, despite the fact the dog was very friendly and knew not a stranger, the dog would refuse to go to the basement. She would stand at the top of the stairs and shake. Several times Chris would have to force her to the steps and close the door. The dog would whine all night long, never leaving the top step. Other times she would be fine and got to the basement without incident.
Chris, still at this point, not making an issue of the “happenings”, was not concerned. He just went on with his daily activities.
Before long, he started to notice more strange things.
Now remember, Chris is in the military and much disciplined. He is organized and very habitual in his routine.
He started noticing things disappear. For instance, he would set his keys on the table. Later he would go to retrieve them and they would be gone. He would go around the house thinking maybe he set them somewhere else and search for them. After a few moments he would go back to the table and the keys would be sitting there, right where he left them.
After several times of this taking place, Chris started an experiment, simply because he thought maybe he was wrong about the misplaced items. So, he would set something down, like a pen or keys, and he would say out loud, “I have set my keys right here on the kitchen table”. He did this so he would mark in his mind exactly where they were for retrieval. Sure enough after a time he would go to the table to retrieve his keys and they would be gone. He walked around the house as before “searching for the keys”. He would then go back to the table only to find them sitting right where he said he had set them.
By this time, Chris thought he might be going crazy, or he had a ghost in the house. Disappearing items happened frequently. One time it happened with Chris’ department issued gun.
Then things got worse. One evening Chris was sitting at his computer in the living room. Out of his peripheral vision, he saw someone walk from the kitchen to the bathroom. Now the kitchen had a huge table in it which took up most of the room; he saw a person walk around the table which would bring you to the outside perimeter of the living room, go into the hall way, and disappear into the bathroom. Chris didn’t think much of it, as friends and family would often walk into his house without knocking and come in; sometimes going straight to the bathroom. But what he found strange is he never heard the kitchen door open, or the bathroom door close. He got up and looked to find the bathroom door open with no one in it. By then he knew there was something not right; he still heard the occasional gospel music late in the evening, the dog still not going down to the basement on occasion, and the missing items being returned. So, Chris decided that it had to be the ghost of Mr. Hines.
Chris found himself talking to Mr. Hines when his items were missing. He would say, “Ok, Mr. Hines, I need my keys, I’m going to be late”.
Chris told me he never felt like the ghost was evil or out to harm him. He thought maybe the ghost was just having a little fun.
Then late one night, Chris woke up suddenly. It was during the winter. He looked up and saw a silhouette of a man standing in the doorway to his bedroom. His arms were folded leaning against the door way. Chris had a gun in the nightstand and was going to reach for it and shoot the man, thinking that he had an intruder. Chris couldn’t move. The only part of his body that he could move was his head. So, being the fearless guy that he is, decided to go back to sleep.
Chris lived there for about ten years. Most of the activity that took place was when Chris lived alone. At one point while living there, Chris had gotten married, and no activity took place during that time. These things only happened while he was alone.
Chris moved from the house and built a bigger one for him and his family. He leased the house out to a friend of his; “Howard”. Howard was going to eventually buy the house from Chris.
Chris never told anyone about the happenings. He thought people would think he was crazy, and he wasn’t too sure if he wasn’t. So after renting the house to Howard, one day Howard came to pay the rent and mentioned to Chris that something weird was going on in the house. Chris never said a word. Another time Howard told Chris that he kept hearing gospel music being played in the basement, and about things disappearing and reappearing. Finally Chris gave in and told him about the things that happened to him. Chris finally felt like he wasn’t crazy. Howard decided after ten months that he could no longer live in the house and didn’t want to buy it.
Chris eventually sold it.
He told me that a family member of one the Sergeant’s had bought the house and if I was interested, I could ask him to let me talk to the current owners and see if they have experienced anything.
