The archeologists think that it must have been a very powerful city, a power center that ruled over a large area. In fact it is one of the biggest Mayan cities discovered so far. It has been named Chactún, meaning either "red" or "large rock" in the Mayan language.

The city has been dated between 600 and 900 AD. There are pyramids at the site and also steles with inscriptions.
