SPACE - On August 25th, Peru was possibly hit by a meteorite. It is not yet clear if the meteorite actually hit the ground, but forest fires south of Cusco suggest that it did. The inhabitants of Cusco saw a fiery object cross the sky, coming through the atmosphere. Experts think it was a meteorite.
It is remarkable that such an incident occurs near Cusco, because Cusco is near Machu Picchu, the famous ancient Inca-monument. According to ancient Inca legend, there was a legendary civilization before our time that disappeared after a mysterious catastrophe. The Inca legends and rock paintings depict a comet or asteroid between Orion and the Bull.
Skeptics say that hundreds of meteorites hit the Earth each year, and many of them are never found. The phenomenon seen in Peru could also have been caused by a airplane, when the setting sun lit up its fuel trail.
The authorities in Peru are still investigating to find that the object’s landing place. If the object is found, more questions can be answered.
